Columbia is the capital of South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 116,278. It is the county seat of Richland County. Columbia, South Carolina is located in Richland/Lexington County. Columbia is located in the center of the state of South Carolina. The Greater Columbia area consists of Ballentine, Blythewood, Dentsville, Eastover, Forest Acres, Fort Jackson, Gadsden, Gaston, Hopkins, Lake Murray, Lexington, Pontiac, West Columbia and White Rock. Columbia lifestyles are as varied as the individual families who make up the Midlands.
Columbia is home to the main campus of the University of South Carolina. Fort Jackson is the largest United States Army Initial Entry (basic) training base and is located east of the city. Columbia is also home to the Columbia Inferno of the ECHL.
Columbia recently gained a world-class sporting and event arena, the Colonial Center. This is part of a revitalization campaign which has also brought the city a new, modern convention center located near the arena, a planned Omni Hotel, and a Ruth's Chris steakhouse. Columbia's daily newspaper is The State. The city and its surroundings are served by Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Diversity is the key to Columbia's economy. Located in Columbia is The University of South Carolina, Benedict College, Columbia College and other technical colleges and is home to thousands of students. Also located in Columbia is Fort Jackson, the largest Army training base in the country. Columbia has a sizable retirement community, as well. Columbia's economy benefits from a varied commercial-industrial base.
There are seven county public school districts serving Greater Columbia. The area is also served by many private and parochial schools. Columbia schools prove their excellence by many having won the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Award, with several of those schools winning it twice. Numerous other awards and honors have been bestowed upon Columbia schools including recognition in several national publications, including Money and Redbook magazines, The New York Times and several others. Columbia schools attract and retain a high caliber teaching staff. A majority of faculty members hold a master's or doctoral degree.
There are plentiful options for leisure time activities from museums, award winning libraries, community theatre and the Koger Center for the Performing Arts to Riverbanks Zoo to Lake Murray. Columbia is fortunate to have a myriad of arts to choose from on any given weekend of the year - a play at any of the seven theaters, a free concert in Finlay Park, the nationally acclaimed Columbia City Ballet, a gallery opening in the Congaree Vista, the professional South Carolina Philharmonic or a visit to the new Columbia Museum of Art. Lake Murray is seventy-eight square miles of recreation, elegant homes, inspirational sunsets and lazy, hazy iced-tea-sipping summer days in the Midlands of South Carolina.
